What is an infographic web tool or app? How can info graphics enhance learning?

What is an infographic web tool or app?

An infographic web tool or app is an internet application or kind of software which enables the user to  create a meaningful  pictorial or visual display of complex data.

is a visual representation of a data set or instructive material. An infographic takes a large amount of information in text or numerical form and then condenses it into a combination of images and text, allowing viewers to quickly grasp the essential insights the data contains. Infographics are not a product of the Web, but the Internet has helped popularize their use as a content medium.

According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infographic an inforgraphic is:
Information graphics or infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly and clearly.[1][2] They can improve cognition by utilizing graphics to enhance the human visual system’s ability to see patterns and trends.[3][4] The process of creating infographics can be referred to as data visualization, information design, or information architecture.[2]

What are some reasons for using infographics in teaching?

Infographics are used for the following reasons:
  • To make complex information accessible to students
  • Since some students are visual learners, the infographic appeals to their learning style.
  • To stimulate higher levels of thinking such as analysis, synthesis and evaluation
  • To enable students to see relationships between mathematical concepts (e.g. percent, ratios, proportion, etc.) and Judaic content

Below you will find examples of infographics taken from http://www.pewforum.org/2013/10/01/jewish-american-beliefs-attitudes-culture-survey/

On the next post we will begin our discussion of Infogram, and infographic web tool.
